Karl Wilhelm Freiherr von Heideck (1788–1861) Monastiraki Square in Athens, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1851, 52 × 71 cm. Provenance: the Eynard Collection. This work is not listed in Renée Loche’s book: ‘La collection Eynard’, 1979 Trained in Zurich at Johann Heinrich Meyer’s art school, Heideck joined the Bavarian army in 1805, where he enjoyed a distinguished military career. A philhellene, he travelled to Greece in 1826 to support the independence movement against the Ottoman Empire. Fascinated by the beauty of Greece, he produced numerous idealised landscapes, characterised by meticulous brushwork and refined colouring. His military successes led to his appointment as Major-General, and subsequently as a member of the Regency Council of the Greek State during the minority of King Otto I. Dated 1851, this painting pays a stirring tribute to the Philhellenic cause and bears witness to the special ties that bound Switzerland and Greece, personified here by Heideck and Jean-Gabriel Eynard.
