The Vision – based on *Thaïs*, an opera by Jules Massenet, 1899. (In the Egyptian desert, the monk Athanaël withdraws to a secluded spot to pray. He falls asleep and, in a dream, sees the beautiful Thaïs, a courtesan from Alexandria, performing and dancing. Awoken by this sacrilegious vision, which he describes with the words ‘Shame! Horror! Eternal darkness!”, he realises he is haunted by this woman. He decides to return to Alexandria to convert Thaïs and save her, marking the starting point of the opera’s entire plot).
