Paris, J. Hetzel, 1845–1846. Two in-8 volumes bound in red half-shagreen with corner pieces, spined with raised bands set with gilt and blind-stamped fillets, marbled edges.
One of the most famous Romantic illustrated works, this being the first edition. Texts by Balzac, Sand, Nodier, Musset, Nerval, etc. Illustrated with a large number of woodcuts (out of the text) by Gavarni and four by Bertall, as well as numerous en-text engravings. The map of Paris is missing, as is often the case.
Bindings slightly rubbed, edges worn, interior in fair condition
with the inevitable scattered foxing. Overall, a good copy.
