GARUDA PENDANT
Nepal — gold, turquoise and rubies
An amulet pendant in repoussé and chiselled gold depicting Garuda, the divine bird-man, with outstretched wings, seizing a serpent (naga) which he is devouring, standing on a lotus-blossom pedestal. The eyes are set with ruby cabochons; the wings, hands and feet are inlaid with turquoise. Loop at the top.
18-carat gold (750 ‰). Nepal, Newar craftsmanship. Presumed to date from the 19th century.
Height: 5.1 cm — Gross weight: 17 g. Condition: one eye has been replaced.
