Description
MIRABEAU (VICTOR RIQUETI, MARQUIS DE) L'Ami des Hommes, or Treatise on Population. New edition, expanded to include a fourth part and summaries. sl [Avignon], n.p., 1758–1760. 6 parts in 3 vols. in-4, marbled calfskin, decorated ribbed spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Frontispiece by Nicholas Blakey, engraved by Fessard. Some minor wear to the binding. A small impression on the top margin of a few folios in the last volume. First complete edition of this major work in the history of economic thought. The first three parts, constituting ‘L’Ami des hommes’, are presented here in their second edition, published by Mirabeau after he had embraced physiocratic doctrines. The following three sections appear here for the first time: they include, in particular, the ‘Précis de l’organisation’ or treatise on the provincial estates, as well as the ‘Questions intéressantes’ attributed to Quesnay and Marivelt in the fourth part. The fifth and sixth parts, published in 1760, comprise the ‘Mémoire sur l’agriculture’, the ‘Reply to Duclos’s Essay on Bridges and Roads’, and, above all, the first public edition of Quesnay’s ‘Economic Table’, which had previously been circulated in confidence, accompanied by Mirabeau’s explanatory comments.
