Description
SEGALEN (VICTOR), WRITING UNDER THE PSEUDONYM MAX-ANÉLY. Les Immémoriaux. Paris, Mercure de France, 1907. 12mo, paperback, printed cover. First edition published under the pseudonym Max-Anély, of which only 17 copies were printed on large-format paper. ‘The pseudonym MAX-ANELY chosen by Victor Segalen to sign his first book was made up of two first names (the second slightly altered): MAX, that of his best friend at the time, MAX PRAT, his former schoolmate at the Lycée de Brest (...) ANNELY (which became ANELY) was one of his wife’s first names (...)”, Jean Loize, ‘From Tahiti to Tibet: The Stopovers and Spoils of the Poet Victor Segalen (1878–1919)’, 1944. Included are four further copies of the same edition. This makes for a fine set of 5 VOLUMES on high-quality paper featuring a small Maori woodcut (following 7 Japan and 10 Holland), including one press copy (stamped ‘MF’) and one copy bearing the notation ‘second edition’ on the cover.
