Description
M. GÉRARD
Cultured pearl and diamond bracelet
A spectacular bracelet comprising fifteen rows of cultured pearls, fastened by a geometric Art Deco-style plate clasp in gold and platinum, openwork and entirely set with old-cut, eight-eight-cut and baguette-cut diamonds, centred with a round brilliant-cut diamond weighing approximately 0.45 carats. Pearl diameter: approximately 3.7 mm.
Signed M. Gérard and numbered CS 817. Gold and platinum; master’s mark of the Dumont et Demand workshop (‘DD’, die symbol
, 61 rue des Petits Champs, Paris, struck in 1973).
After several years working for one of the most prestigious jewellery houses, Van Cleef & Arpels, Louis
Gérard (1923–2006) decided to strike out on his own and founded M. Gérard in 1968, opening his first boutique at 8 Avenue Montaigne in Paris. Driven by an avowed desire to create ‘the most beautiful jewellery in the world’, he designed sumptuous sets lavishly set with diamonds and coloured gemstones; their craftsmanship, entrusted to the finest Parisian workshops, was often noted for its exceptional quality.
His clientele — a wealthy jet-set from Europe, the Middle East and the Far East — flocked to the lavish parties and fashion shows he organised in Cannes and Monte Carlo. Within ten years, boutiques had opened in Gstaad, London, Lausanne and Monte Carlo, and by 1980 the firm boasted of being, for the fifth consecutive year, France’s leading exporter of fine jewellery.
In November 1985, weakened by considerable expenditure, the company was sold to a group of American investors. After being bought out and relaunched at 16 Avenue Montaigne under the name ‘Louis Gérard, Joaillier international’, it closed its doors for good in December 1991.
Circa 1975.
Dimensions of the motif: 6.5 × 3.2 cm — Gross weight: 64 g.
