Description
SEGALEN (VICTOR) René Leys. Illustrations by Chou Ling. Paris, Les Cent Une, 1952. 2 in-4 volumes in accordion-fold (Chinese-style folded leaves), bound in the Chinese style, green silk covers with a title label in Chinese, set within two black lacquered boards with the Chinese title engraved in green (by the master lacquerer Tchou-Tse-Tsin), held together by sea-green silk laces, and housed in a green silk slipcase with a Chinese title label, fastened in the Chinese style. Slight water-stains inside the slipcase; otherwise in very good condition. 43 engravings in the text, etched on copper and printed in sanguine, including 4 full-page illustrations, 36 in-text illustrations, 2 end-piece illustrations and one for justification; these 43 illustrations reproduce 38 original compositions by Chou Ling. A print run of 134 copies signed by the president, the vice-president and the illustrator; no. 23. A fine edition by the ‘Cent Une’ society of women bibliophiles, in the spirit of the Korean Collection edited by V. Segalen.
