Silver rhyton (drinking cup) depicting a deer’s head, with a flared conical body decorated with an amati pattern imitating the coat, the interior in vermeil; the antlers forming the handle, the rim and the ring adorned with oak leaves and acorns.
Silver of at least 800 ‰ fineness, Austrian work (Vienna), dated 1854; Austrian hallmarks; interior
vermeil. Manufacturer’s mark ‘M&K’ for Mayerhofer & Klinkosch, silversmiths in Vienna.
The firm Mayerhofer & Klinkosch, which operated under this name from 1830 to 1869, was one of the most prestigious silversmith’s workshops in
Vienna; later becoming J. C. Klinkosch, it was one of the purveyors to the Imperial Court of Austria.
