Description
VON SCHAFFGOTSCH FAMILY COAT OF ARMS PLATE
Gebrüder Sommé, Breslau
A round silver plate, the undulating rim decorated with ribbon-like fillets and bunches of grapes within reserved areas; the rim engraved with a
large quartered coat of arms (chequered and Silesian eagles), surmounted by a crowned escutcheon, and topped by three crowned helmets whose crests depict a plume of peacock feathers, a sheep and a griffin. Louis XVI style.
800‰ silver. German craftsmanship from Breslau; hallmarked ‘SOMMÉ NACHF. · 800 · BRESLAU’ for the firm Gebrüder Sommé
(Sommé Nachfolger).
Founded in 1794 in Breslau by Jacques Sommé, the firm Gebrüder
Sommé was the court jeweller (Hofjuwelier) to Emperor Wilhelm II; the inscription ‘Nachfolger’ (successors) and the 800 hallmark date the dish to around 1900. The coat of arms is that of the Counts von Schaffgotsch (Semperfrei von und auf Kynast, Freiherren zu Trachenberg), one of the most powerful houses of the Silesian nobility, attested as early as the 13th century; the crest featuring a sheep constitutes the canting coat of arms (Schaf, ‘sheep’ in German).
Breslau, circa 1900.
Diameter: 25.3 cm — Weight: 363 g.
