The Risen Christ showing his wounds
Softwood panel, single plank, unjoined
Height: 50 cm – Width: 40.5 cm
Previous restorations and losses
Our panel was the central part of a predella and depicts the Risen Christ in his tomb, opening the wound on his right side to fill the chalice with his blood, in reference to the Eucharist. This is an ‘Effusio Sanguinis’, a theme associated with Dominican devotion, which indicates that it belonged to an altarpiece painted for a church belonging to that order. This specific subject can also be found from the same period, the late fifteenth century, in the works of Giovanni Bellini (London, National Gallery), Carlo Crivelli (Milan, Poldi Pezzoli Museum), and Benvenuto di Giovanni (Town Hall of Montalcino).
