Provenance: Théophile Homolle Collection; has remained in the family through inheritance ever since. A graduate of the École Normale Supérieure and holder of the agrégation
in history, Théophile Homolle joined the French School at Athens in 1874, where he distinguished himself through significant discoveries on the island of Delos. Appointed Director of the Louvre Museum in 1904, he resigned in 1911 following the theft of the Mona Lisa.
After briefly returning to head the French School of Athens from 1912 to 1913, he became Director of the National Library, a post he held until 1923.
