Description
LACLOCHE ‘Scarecrow’ brooch in gold, platinum and coloured gemstones A brooch depicting a scarecrow with its arms outstretched, wearing a top hat, its head formed from a carnelian bead. The body, arms and legs are in yellow gold, with the extremities fringed with bundles of straw. The platinum collar is set with rose-cut diamonds; the frock coat and limbs are adorned with calibrated sapphire, emerald and ruby buttons and rose-cut diamonds in closed-set mounts. French craftsmanship. Signed J. Lacloche, Paris-Cannes. 18-carat yellow gold (750 ‰) and platinum; eagle’s head hallmark; master’s mark illegible. Circa 1945–1950. Height: 4.8 cm — Gross weight: 6 g. One bent prong; slight dent on the crown. Founded in Paris in 1892 by the Lacloche brothers, the house was counted amongst the great jewellers of the Place Vendôme, distinguishing itself during the Art Deco period through the bold use of coloured gemstones. The name was revived in 1933 by the nephew, Jacques Lacloche, who established the brand between Paris and Cannes and moved in the circles of the Côte d’Azur — notably, he created jewellery for Grace Kelly’s wedding in Monaco in 1956.
