Description
Pair of black lacquered panels inlaid with mother-of-pearl, decorated with vases of flowers and a poem on the four seasons
Pair of rectangular panels in black lacquered wood, decorated with mother-of-pearl inlay (a technique known as mother-of-pearl marquetry on lacquer). Each panel features, in its upper section, a calligraphic inscription in mother-of-pearl quoting a line from the classical Chinese quatrain on the four seasons (one evoking summer and the lotus pond, the other evoking autumn and chrysanthemum wine, as well as winter and snow).
The lower part of each panel is adorned with a baluster-shaped vase of flowers, richly decorated with a miniature landscape (mountains, architecture), from which emerges a bouquet of flowers and branches rendered in variegated mother-of-pearl (with pink, grey and golden highlights depending on the angle of the light). A border featuring a Greek fret pattern (in the Chinese ‘Greek key’ style, léï wén) frames the top and bottom of each panel.
Technique and style characteristic of Chinese or Vietnamese mother-of-pearl inlaid lacquer (the ‘flat-point’ or najeon decorative art), reviving an ancient tradition (Qing dynasty).
