Description
A rare, finely cast bronze cosmetic box, resting on an openwork base with four stylised castors. The body is richly decorated with two facing makaras with wide-open mouths, from which plant scrolls emerge. In the centre, a protective figure is carved in high relief. The lid is crowned by an elegant female statuette, probably a deity or an apsara, standing in a hieratic pose.
The piece elegantly illustrates the decorative vocabulary of Khmer art from the Bayon period, characterised by
the combination of protective mythological creatures and abundant plant ornamentation. Intended to hold the lime used in the preparation of betel, this box provides a valuable insight into court customs and aristocratic practices of the Khmer Empire.
