Description
Gilded bronze bodhisattva. China. 16th–17th century. Height: 23 cm.
Cast bronze with a brown and green patina and traces of gilding. The bodhisattva is depicted standing on a lotus-shaped plinth, his hands joined in front of his chest in a gesture of veneration. Clothed in a long robe with flowing folds, the serene and finely modelled face is framed by a tall headdress and long, circular ears.
The figure is set against a spectacular openwork mandorla in the shape of flames, richly decorated with engraved concentric lines evoking spiritual radiance. This particularly elaborate type of mandorla is characteristic of Chinese Buddhist art from the late Ming dynasty.
The piece rests on a two-legged bronze base, intended to be mounted on a domestic altar or in a small shrine.
Condition: general wear to the gilding; a fine antique patina of verdigris and nuanced brown. Some wear and minor distortions consistent with its age. The base has some missing sections and an old break.
