Description
Head of a deity or bodhisattva. Khmer art, Cambodia. Bayon style, late 12th–early 13th century. Brown sandstone with an aged patina. Height: 20 cm.
This head embodies all the stylistic characteristics of Bayon art. The cylindrical headdress, composed of finely carved superimposed tiers, is encircled by a diadem adorned with floral and geometric motifs. The elongated ears, now slightly eroded, are reminiscent of the traditional iconography of enlightened beings.
The delicate modelling of the face, the balance of the proportions and the quality of the carving bear witness to a workshop that had fully mastered the canons of Khmer art from the Angkor period.
The surface displays a beautiful burial patina, with traces of weathering and wear consistent with prolonged exposure to the elements, reinforcing the work’s authenticity and archaeological character.
