Height of plinth: 25 cm; Height of statue: 39 cm 19th century An important gilded bronze sculpture depicting Palden Lhamo, the protective goddess of Tibetan Buddhism and guardian of the Dharma. The deity is depicted seated in a side-saddle position on her mule, in a dynamic pose, with the mount advancing across a base depicting a stylised ground. Her wrathful face, with expressive features, is framed by a profusion of flaming hair. She is richly adorned with jewellery, necklaces and finely chiselled ritual ornaments. Her right arm is raised in a gesture of power, whilst her left hand holds an attribute that is now lost or difficult to make out. Her celestial scarf is seen unfurling around her body.
