Pra Kong Chai
Thailand, Kingdom of Ayutthaya, 17th–18th century
Bronze with a brown and green patina resulting from burial.
Height: 37 cm
A bronze figure depicting Pra Kong Chai, standing in a frontal pose, arms slightly bent and hands raised, now missing its attributes. The face, with its gentle and serene features, is framed by long earlobes and crowned by a tall, finely crafted cylindrical headdress. The slender figure is adorned with a stylised sampot falling down to the legs.
The sculpture retains a remarkable ancient patina, enriched by natural concretions and oxidation, bearing witness to a long period buried in the ground. An ancient casting crack or burial fracture runs vertically through the bust without detracting from the work’s aesthetic quality or its historical significance.
With its harmonious proportions, understated modelling and refined craftsmanship, this figure is part of the tradition of religious bronzes produced during the Ayutthaya period, when Khmer influences gradually blended with the distinctly Thai style.
Condition: corrosion resulting from burial, with an old crack and a stable patina.
