Northern Thailand, Kingdom of Lanna, Chiang Saen school, 15th century
Bronze with a beautiful dark brown patina, tinged with green highlights.
Height: 28 cm.
An impressive bronze Buddha head from the Chiang Saen school, one of the major artistic centres of the Kingdom of Lanna. The face, imbued with a profound serenity, is characterised by harmonious proportions and exceptionally gentle modelling.
The eyes, widely spaced and half-closed, convey a state of meditation, whilst the delicately smiling lips lend the whole a look of compassion and inner peace. The straight nose, the brow ridges joined by a continuous line, and the long ears with distended lobes conform to the iconographic canons of the Buddha.
The hair consists of small, regular curls carefully chiselled, surmounted by a conical ushnisha symbolising spiritual elevation. This hairstyle, particularly characteristic of the Chiang Saen school, reflects the influence of the Sinhalese tradition whilst affirming a sculptural language specific to the Kingdom of Lanna.
The high-quality cast iron features an antique dark brown patina enhanced by subtle green hues, attesting to its age. Some wear and minute pitting are consistent with the work’s age. The head is mounted on an elegant modern black metal plinth.
