GLASSED TERRACOTTA VOTIVE PLAQUE
China, Qing dynasty (1644–1912), 18th–19th century
Moulded terracotta with polychrome glaze.
A rare glazed terracotta votive plaque depicting a Buddha seated majestically on a lotus pedestal emerging from the waves, flanked by two standing bodhisattvas or disciples holding ritual attributes. The whole is set within an architectural niche evoking a sacred grotto, surmounted by a decoration of stylised rocks, symbolising the celestial realm.
The central figure is depicted in a serene pose, his right hand lowered in a gesture of compassion whilst his left rests on his knee. His face, with its full and serene features, is encircled by a broad circular halo. The two attendants, arranged symmetrically, reinforce the solemn character of the composition.
The glaze, dominated by shades of green, ochre and brown, is characteristic of Chinese glazed ceramics from the Qing period. The nuances and natural drips of the glaze lend the work a remarkable decorative richness.
Intended for a domestic altar or a Buddhist shrine, this plaque illustrates the enduring nature of Chinese folk religious traditions and the mastery of workshops specialising in architectural and votive ceramics.
