BRONZE BUDDHA HEAD
Kingdom of Siam (Thailand), Ayutthaya style
17th–18th century
Bronze with a brown patina.
Height: 30 cm (excluding the plinth).
A fine bronze Buddha head depicting the Blessed One with an expression of profound serenity, characteristic of works from the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. The face, with its delicately modelled features, is enlivened by a slight smile, whilst the half-closed eyes convey a state of meditation and spiritual awakening.
The hair is rendered in the Siamese style as fine curls, topped by a hemispherical ushnisha symbolising supreme wisdom. The forehead is adorned with an elegant tiara, finely engraved with floral and geometric motifs, framed by discreet lateral points. The long, elongated ears are a reminder of the Buddha’s princely status prior to his renunciation.
The high-quality cast bronze retains a pleasing antique patina with brown-green hues. The back of the head, which has been left open, reveals the lost-wax casting technique, characteristic of many religious bronzes from this period.
With its delicate modelling, balanced proportions and gentle expression, this work is a remarkable example of Siamese Buddhist sculpture inspired by the great workshops of Ayutthaya.
Condition: In good overall condition. Wear, minor distortions and old losses consistent with its age. Original patina. Presented on a modern wooden plinth.
