BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN GINGER JAR

Porcelain decorated with cobalt blue underglaze.
An elegant baluster-shaped ginger pot, resting on a slight foot and featuring a circular opening designed to accommodate a lid, which is now missing.
The decoration, painted with great finesse in cobalt blue underglaze, depicts a vast lakeside landscape brought to life by figures moving through a mountainous setting. Pavilions, trees, rocks, a stone bridge and boats are arranged in a balanced composition, evoking the idealised landscapes of Chinese literati painting. The inner rim of the neck is adorned with a stylised plant frieze.
The quality of the drawing, the fluidity of the cobalt washes and the richness of the shades bear witness to the craftsmanship of the imperial and private workshops of the Qing dynasty. Originally intended to hold spices, sweets or candied ginger, this type of vessel was also highly prized in Europe from the 18th century onwards as an ornamental object.
With its refined decoration and balanced proportions, this jar is a fine example of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain from the Qing period.
Condition: The original lid is missing. Slight wear and minor signs of use consistent with its age. In good overall condition.
