Stoneware footed bowl with Jun blue glaze
An elegantly shaped bowl with a rounded, slightly flared body, resting on a short, circular foot. It is entirely covered in a thick, monochrome opalescent blue glaze, displaying subtle variations in tone and a deep, slightly milky appearance characteristic of Jun-style glazes.
The glaze, which is particularly rich and deep, displays shades ranging from celadon blue to lavender blue, with areas of deeper colour resulting from the firing process. The rim may reveal a more verdigris-like hue where the glaze is thinner, a phenomenon well documented in Jun wares from the Northern Song period.
The kilns at Junzhou, in what is now Henan province, produced some of the most remarkable blue-glazed stoneware of the Song period. The Metropolitan Museum holds, in particular, Jun pieces attributed to the 11th–12th centuries / first half of the 12th century.
