Description
CHINA — PAIR OF BLUE-AND-WHITE ‘GU’-SHAPED PORCELAIN VASES Qing dynasty, probably 18th–19th century Porcelain with cobalt blue underglaze decoration A pair of ‘gu’-shaped vases, with flared necks and tapered bodies, resting on a slightly flared foot. The decoration, painted in cobalt blue underglaze, features an elegant repertoire of plant and floral motifs, arranged around a central frieze. The upper and lower sections are enlivened by broad, stylised blue motifs, whilst the middle section consists of a frieze of floral scrolls on a white background. The deliberately symmetrical composition highlights the very slender silhouette of the two pieces. The quality of the deep, rich blue, together with the contrast against the white background, lends the piece a particularly decorative character. Proposed period: Qing, 18th–19th century Material: porcelain Technique: cobalt-painted decoration applied after firing Decoration: blue and white, floral motifs and scrollwork Shape: gu vase
