Two ‘hare’s fur’ tea bowls
A pair of stoneware tea bowls with flared sides resting on a small circular foot. They are covered with a deep brown-black glaze with a ‘hare’s fur’ effect, criss-crossed with fine golden-brown streaks and branches, resulting from the separation of iron oxides during firing.
This spectacular glaze is one of the most iconic products of the kilns at Jian, in Fujian province, and was particularly prized for the preparation of whipped tea during the Song dynasty.
Both bowls feature a simple and elegant silhouette, with a slightly thickened rim and a small ring-shaped foot.
