Description
LAOS – Kingdom of Lan Xang
Bronze Buddha head
17th century
A fine bronze Buddha head with a nuanced dark brown patina, adorned with finely rendered hair in small, regular curls, surmounted by a tall, openwork and dynamic flame (rasmi), the emblem of Enlightenment.
The face, with its harmonious features and an air of great serenity, features half-closed eyelids, arched eyebrows meeting above a slender, straight nose, a delicately smiling mouth and a rounded chin. The long, elongated earlobes are a reminder of the Buddha’s princely status before his renunciation.
This iconography is characteristic of 17th-century statuary from the Kingdom of Lan Xang, where Siamese influences from Ayutthaya blend with a distinctly Laotian aesthetic, favouring softer faces, full forms and an expression of great spirituality.
Beautiful antique patina.
Height: 36 cm (excluding plinth).
Condition: very good condition; wear and minor irregularities consistent with its age. Mounted on a modern plinth
