Description
SOUTH INDIA Stone bust of a female deity Chola or Vijayanagara style, circa 13th–16th century Carved from fine granite, this bust depicts a standing female deity, preserved down to the shoulders. The face, with its regular features and serene expression, is brought to life by almond-shaped eyes, a slight smile and a carved urna in the centre of the forehead. The high headdress is adorned with a small seated divine figure, framed by architectural elements, whilst the ears are adorned with large circular pendants. The neck is encircled by several finely carved necklaces and the shoulders are covered with richly detailed ornaments. The full bosom, characteristic of the feminine ideal in medieval Indian art, bears witness to the mastery of the sculptors of South India. This type of sculpture adorned the external niches or shrines of the great Hindu temples in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Material: grey granite. Height: 60 cm Condition: ancient fragment; erosion and minor wear consistent with its age; arms missing.
