Important bronze Buddha head
U Thong B style, 15th century
An exceptional bronze Buddha head with a beautiful golden-brown patina, known as ‘honey’, depicting the Blessed One with an expression of profound serenity.
The face, with its full and harmonious features, is brought to life by half-closed eyelids beneath delicately arched eyebrows, a straight nose and a finely drawn mouth sketching the traditional smile of compassion. The hair consists of small, regular curls, crowned by a tall, conical uṣṇīṣa, characteristic of works from the U Thong school. The long earlobes symbolise Prince Siddhārtha’s renunciation of royal finery.
The U Thong B style, developed in the 14th and 15th centuries in central Thailand and adopted at the beginning of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, is distinguished by the nobility of its proportions, the power of its modelling and an inner spirituality that make it one of the major expressions of Siamese Buddhist art.
The remarkable antique patina, with its warm shades of amber and golden brown, highlights the quality of the casting and lends this work an exceptional presence.

Material: bronze with a honey-coloured patina.
Period: 15th century.
Condition: very good condition; an ancient loss at the base of the neck resulting from a separation from the original statue, with wear and minor alterations consistent with its age.
