Important stone head in the Bayon style
Late 12th – early 13th century (or in the Bayon style, according to expert assessment)
A large sandstone head depicting a serene face, crowned with a tall cylindrical diadem finely decorated with geometric and floral motifs.
The face displays the emblematic features of Bayon art: a broad forehead, slightly downcast almond-shaped eyes, prominent brow ridges, a straight nose and a mouth with full lips forming the famous ‘Khmer smile’. The elongated ears, now slightly eroded, reflect the figure’s spiritual status.
The tall cylindrical headdress, richly decorated with chiselled bands, likely denotes a royal figure or a deity from the Buddhist or Brahmanic pantheon, characteristic of the major sculptural programmes carried out during the reign of Jayavarman VII.
The sandstone has a beautiful antique patina and uniform weathering, evidence of prolonged exposure.
Height: 50 cm (excluding plinth).
Material: sandstone.

Condition: ancient fragment; wear, small chips and erosion consistent with its age; mounted on a modern plinth.
