Description
Bodhisattva head — Gandhara Grey schist Art of Gandhara, a region in present-day Pakistan Circa the 2nd–3rd century See later Height: 37 cm An imposing bodhisattva head in grey schist, carved in the Greco-Buddhist style characteristic of Gandharan art. The face, which has a commanding presence, features regular, naturalistic features, with clearly defined brow ridges, slightly downcast almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose and a finely modelled mouth. The hair, rendered in wavy locks and arranged neatly around the crown of the head, is topped by a rich ceremonial headdress, evoking the bodhisattva’s princely status. The treatment of the face bears witness to the remarkable synthesis between Buddhist iconographic tradition and classical Hellenistic influence, characteristic of Gandharan art. The ancient patina and traces of erosion lend the piece a beautiful sense of depth. Its exceptional height of 37 cm makes it a particularly monumental example of a Gandharan head.
