An impressive and very beautiful crowned Buddha head in bronze, depicted with an expression of great serenity. The face, with its full, rounded features, has half-closed eyes, a straight and finely modelled nose, a delicately drawn mouth and a slightly rounded chin, lending the whole piece a remarkable gentleness.
The forehead is dominated by a tall mitre-crown (mukuta) richly adorned with plant and floral motifs in relief, framed by rows of beads and decorative friezes. The long ears with elongated lobes, adorned with pendants, emphasise the princely nature of the depiction.
The particularly elaborate hairstyle and crown are characteristic of depictions of the royal Buddha or of a bodhisattva in the guise of a sovereign, which were highly prized in Ayutthaya art. The elegant rendering of the face, the arched line of the eyebrows and the refined stylisation of the lips bear witness to the high quality of the sculpture.
The surface displays a beautiful, deep brown-black patina, with traces of lacquer and a crack on the back, bearing witness to the piece’s age and history.
