Description
Female figure — Devatā Soft stone / sandstone Khmer art, Cambodia Angkorian period, 11th–12th century Height: 60 cm An important Khmer sculpture depicting a standing female figure, carved from soft stone. The figure has a serene face with stylised features, framed by an elaborate headdress in the form of a tall mitre, characteristic of female iconography in Angkorian sculpture. The bare torso is rendered with great restraint, whilst the waist is emphasised by a wide belt holding a long sampot with vertical pleats, the particularly graphic treatment of which accentuates the figure’s monumental quality. The deliberately elongated silhouette, together with the calm modelling of the face and the stylised hairstyle, evoke the depictions of devatā and female deities adorning Khmer shrines. The arms, now fragmentary, were probably depicted in a ritual pose or holding attributes. The sculpture nevertheless retains a fine monumental presence and an ancient brown-grey patina. Cambodia, Khmer art, Angkorian period, 11th–12th century. Soft stone. Height: 60 cm. Condition: fragmentary sculpture; arms and extremities missing; surface wear and erosion; modern plinth.
