Description
Double Ganesha seated back-to-back Sandstone Cambodia, Khmer art Angkorian period, 11th–12th century Height: 40 cm A rare sandstone sculpture depicting two Ganesha figures seated back-to-back, united in a single monolithic composition. The two deities are depicted crouching, with their legs crossed, their bodies pressed together and their elephant heads facing in opposite directions. The four visible arms extend outwards to the sides, contributing to the remarkable symmetrical composition of the whole. The dual depiction lends this work a particularly architectural and protective character, as the two deities appear to be simultaneously watching over opposite directions. The deliberately compact rendering of the bodies, the large ears, the trunks and the headdresses combine to form a composition of great sculptural power. The sculpture retains a beautiful golden-brown sandstone patina, with signs of age and some minor damage, particularly on the tips of the arms and the plinth.
