Description
Seated Buddha — Chiang Saen School, early period Bronze with a brown patina Northern Thailand, Lanna Chiang Saen School, early period, 14th–15th century Height: 40 cm An important bronze Buddha seated in meditation, depicted in the classical Earth-touching Mudra (bhūmisparśa mudrā), with the right hand resting on the knee, fingers pointing towards the ground. The face, full and radiating great serenity, displays the characteristics of the early Chiang Saen school: strongly defined brow ridges, half-closed eyes, a straight nose and finely modelled lips. The fold of the robe rests above the left breast. The body, with its powerful and balanced proportions, is rendered with remarkable simplicity. The hair consists of small, tight curls, surmounted by an ushnisha ending in a flame, whilst the long ears with elongated lobes recall the traditional attributes of the Buddha. The monastic robe, clinging to the body, is indicated by understated lines, revealing the power of the torso’s modelling. The position of the legs and the very stable construction of the base are particularly characteristic of early Lanna works. A beautiful dark brown patina, with surface variations and signs of wear attesting to its age. Northern Thailand, Kingdom of Lanna, Chiang Saen school, early period, 14th–15th century. Bronze. Height: 40 cm. Condition: surface wear and signs of age; a few minor imperfections
