Description
Buddha Head Thailand, Ayutthaya–Thonburi transitional period, 18th century Bronze with a brown patina, traces of gilding. Height: 28 cm A fine bronze Buddha head, depicted with a serene and contemplative expression. The full-faced features include finely arched eyebrows, half-closed eyes with defined eyelids, a straight nose and a delicately outlined mouth, graced with a faint smile. The hairstyle consists of small, neatly arranged curls, surmounted by a low, rounded ushnisha. The long earlobes, characteristic of Buddhist iconography, frame the face. The particularly gentle rendering of the modelling and the Buddha’s facial features bear witness to the evolution of Siamese sculpture towards the end of the Ayutthaya period. This work can be compared to pieces from the second half of the 18th century, during this period of stylistic transition preceding and accompanying the advent of the Thonburi era. The surface retains a beautiful antique patina, with traces of gilding and brown-green hues that accentuate the bronze’s antique character. Period: c. 1750–1780 Material: bronze Height: 28 cm Origin: Thailand Condition: wear and loss of gilding from age, patina of age; some surface marks due to age.
