BUDDHA HEAD Gandhara, Pakistan / Afghanistan Grey schist 5th–6th century Height: 28 cm A beautiful Buddha head carved from grey schist, characteristic of Gandharan sculpture. The face, radiating great serenity, features regular, idealised features: almond-shaped eyes with half-closed eyelids, finely arched eyebrows, a straight nose and a delicately drawn mouth hinting at a slight smile. The ūrṇā, discreetly marked in the centre of the forehead, is the traditional sign of the Enlightened One. The hair, rendered in wavy strands arranged in tiers, is gathered into a high uṣṇīṣa at the crown of the head. The elongated earlobes are a reminder of his former princely status. The work as a whole bears witness to the remarkable synthesis of Hellenistic naturalism and Buddhist spiritual ideals that characterises the art of Gandhara. The softer, more introspective rendering of the face may be reminiscent of later works, at the juncture between Gandharan traditions and the influences of Gupta art.
