Cambodia — Inspired by the style of the Baphuon
Carved stone
A significant sculpted group depicting a male deity seated in a relaxed pose, accompanied by a female figure standing beside him. The main figure wears an elaborate, tall mitre and a richly decorated sampot. His face displays the characteristic features of Khmer imagery: large eyes, a moustache, slightly protruding lips and a solemn expression.
The female figure, smaller in size, also wears a tall headdress and contributes to the symmetrical composition of the group. The ensemble rests on a quadrangular stone plinth.
The composition incorporates several elements of classical Khmer sculpture, notably the costume, the hairstyles and the frontal depiction of the deities. The overall treatment is reminiscent of the Baphuon style, whose 11th-century works are characterised in particular by slimmer bodies, a narrow waist and a skilfully pleated sampot.
However, judging by the photographs, it cannot be stated with certainty that this is an early 11th-century work. The modelling, the regularity of certain details and the appearance of the surface may indicate a post-Angkorian creation.
