Description
Khmer male bust in sandstone Cambodia, Khmer art Material: grey-beige sandstone Period: probably the Angkorian period, 11th–12th century Height: 50 cm A fragmentary male bust carved from fine-grained sandstone, depicted in a frontal, hieratic pose. The musculature of the torso is rendered with restraint, whilst the particularly elaborate rendering of the clothing constitutes the sculpture’s main feature. The figure wears a richly pleated sampot, held in place by a wide, ornate belt. The vertical folds and trailing panels are rendered in relief with great regularity, creating an elegant interplay of lines characteristic of classical Khmer sculpture. The arms, head and lower body have been lost, leaving a fragmentary work that nevertheless retains a remarkable monumental presence. The simplicity of the torso’s modelling contrasts with the delicacy of the rendering of the garment. This work is comparable to Angkorian Khmer sculpture, possibly of the Baphuon tradition (11th century)
