Description
MALE HEAD Khmer art – probably from the Angkorian period Sandstone Height: 27 cm A fine male head carved from beige-brown sandstone, featuring a full, serene face with powerfully modelled features. The almond-shaped eyes, slightly arched eyebrows, straight nose and finely defined mouth lend the figure an air of calm and dignity. The hair is rendered in small, regular strands and ends at the crown with a characteristic conical element. The physiognomy, devoid of explicitly demonic attributes such as those found in certain asura figures in Khmer iconography, suggests instead a cautious identification with a male figure of divine or Buddhist essence, though it is not possible to determine with certainty whether it represents a Hindu-Buddhist deity or the Buddha. The suggestion that it depicts an asura figure can be cautiously ruled out, given the absence of characteristic iconographic elements. The sculpture displays a fine patina of age on its surface, with traces of erosion and natural patina, bearing witness to its antiquity. Height: 27 cm.
