Description
SEATED BUDDHA IN MEDITATION Burma – Mandalay period, 19th century Carved, polychrome and gilded alabaster Height: 75 cm An important seated Buddha in alabaster, richly polychromed and gilded, depicted in the Earth-Touching Mudra (bhūmisparśa mudrā). The Blessed One is depicted seated in meditation upon a high lotus-shaped plinth. His right hand extends downwards along his knee, the fingers barely touching the ground, whilst his left hand rests in his lap, in accordance with the traditional iconography of the Enlightenment of Siddhartha Gautama. The face, of great gentleness, features half-closed eyes, a slight smile and a deeply contemplative expression. The elongated earlobes and the ushnisha, covered with a regular pattern of small dimples, complete the conventional characteristics of the image of the Buddha. The monastic robe, which is largely exposed over the right shoulder, is rendered with remarkable decorative care. The folds are highlighted by gilded and polychrome accents, whilst the edge of the garment and the plinth are embellished with ornamental motifs. The richness of the gilding and polychromy, as well as the treatment of the face and the robe, are characteristic of Burmese religious sculpture from the Mandalay period, when alabaster was widely used for the creation of images intended for monasteries and shrines. Generally well preserved, with wear and minor signs of age-related use. Height: 75 cm. Period: Burma, Mandalay period, 19th century, probably the second half of the century
