RISHI HERMIT Cambodia – Khmer art Angkorian period, probably 12th century Sandstone Height: 60 cm An important sculpture depicting a Rishi hermit, a figure of an ascetic and sage particularly prominent in Khmer religious iconography. The figure is depicted seated on a broad base, in a posture of meditative repose, with one leg raised and the other bent. The left arm rests on the ground whilst the other rests naturally on the leg. The bare torso, the deliberately simplified modelling of the body and the rendering of the clothing emphasise the figure’s ascetic nature. The sampot, which falls loosely around the hips and leg, is brought to life by numerous finely incised folds. The head has a deliberately stylised appearance. The hair, gathered up and arranged into a complex mass, is a characteristic feature of Khmer Rishi iconography. This depiction forms part of a tradition in which the hermit symbolises wisdom, religious knowledge and spiritual power. The rendering of the back, which is particularly noteworthy, displays broad and understated modelling, with the shoulder blades and musculature rendered through simple yet powerful volumes. The sculpture is conceived as a freestanding figure resting on a substantial rectangular plinth.
