An important depiction of Mañjuśrī (Wenshu), the Bodhisattva of Transcendent Wisdom, shown seated majestically on his vahana, the lion.
The deity has a contemplative and meditative expression. He wears an elaborate, high headdress, whilst two long locks of hair fall down on either side of his shoulders. The loose-fitting robe, rendered in broad, supple folds, envelops the body with a remarkable sense of volume.
The lion, which is particularly imposing, is depicted sitting on its hind legs. Its head, turned towards the viewer, has an expressive countenance, with large eyes, a powerful muzzle, a slightly parted mouth and a luxuriant mane arranged in curls. Its deliberately stylised treatment lends the animal a presence that is both protective and monumental.
The whole piece rests on a substantial plinth shaped like stylised clouds, formed by broad scrolls.
The cast iron, which is extremely heavy and dense, lends this sculpture an exceptional presence. The surface has a dark, uneven patina, as well as traces of oxidation and wear consistent with its age.
The depiction of Mañjuśrī riding a lion is well established in Chinese Buddhist sculpture. He is traditionally depicted with the sword of wisdom or, in some variations, with a ruyi sceptre and/or the Prajñāpāramitā sutra.
