Description
STANDING BRONZE BUDDHA Laotian Buddhist art – Lan Xang tradition Laos Bronze with an antique brown patina Total height: 130 cm Proposed date: 18th century School: Laotian art, Lan Xang / Vientiane tradition Description An imposing and spectacular standing bronze Buddha, depicted in a frontal and majestic pose, set upon an imposing circular, tiered plinth. The Blessed One stands with both arms raised and palms facing forwards, in a gesture evoking protection, tranquillity and the absence of fear. This pose lends the sculpture a particularly powerful and solemn presence. The face, with its gentle and serene features, has slightly downcast eyes, a straight nose and a subtle smile. The elongated ears frame the face and emphasise its Buddhist character. The hair is rendered in small, regular curls, topped by an elongated, rounded ushnīṣa. The deliberately understated modelling of the face and body is in keeping with the aesthetic of Laotian Buddhist sculpture. The torso, largely exposed, is rendered with full, powerful volumes. The Buddha wears a long monastic robe reaching down to his ankles, the folds of which are depicted by long vertical lines. A belt and the hem of the robe emphasise the waist. The feet rest parallel on a small square pedestal, which in turn stands on a large, multi-tiered circular plinth, forming with the figure a particularly decorative monumental ensemble. Style and attribution The sculpture displays the general characteristics of Laotian Buddhist statuary in the Lan Xang tradition, notably the frontal orientation of the figure, the gentle facial features, the hair in small curls, the pronounced ushnīṣa and the elongated silhouette. The treatment of the body and clothing may more specifically evoke the Vientiane tradition, which saw significant development in bronze statuary. Condition A fine, monumental presence. Dark brown patina with natural surface variations. Wear and marks due to age and exposure. A few minor irregularities and signs of wear to be examined in person. The sculpture is presented with its substantial circular plinth, which contributes greatly to its monumental character.
