Description
BUDDHIST ALTAR WITH SEATED BUDDHA AND LARGE MANDORLA
Laos, 19th century
Carved, openwork and patinated wood
Height: 87 cm
A rare carved wooden Buddhist altar featuring, at its centre, a depiction of the Buddha seated in meditation, set upon a stepped plinth.
The Buddha is set within a large ogival wooden mandorla, exceptionally tall and entirely carved and openwork. This is adorned with foliage, floral motifs and flame-like forms, with a succession of decorative star-shaped openwork patterns.
The upper section culminates in a tall, stylised flame, whilst the side panels unfurl into elegant volutes and plant motifs, lending the whole a particularly spectacular silhouette.
The carving retains a beautiful antique patina, with traces of wear and polychromy bearing witness to its former religious function.
Laos, 19th century.
Carved and openwork wood.
H. 87 cm.
Note: the large mandorla is, in my opinion, the most remarkable feature of this altar. Its construction entirely from wood and its openwork decoration give it a far more interesting character than that of a simple votive image.
