FRAGMENT OF A BUDDHA’S HEAD
Siam – Kingdom of Ayutthaya
15th century 37 cm
Bronze with an antique patina; a fragment of the head of Shakyamuni Buddha, taken from a monumental or large-scale statue.
The face, imbued with a profound serenity, displays the characteristics of Siamese Buddhist sculpture from the early Ayutthaya period: half-closed eyes cast downwards, arched eyebrows, a straight nose and a delicately defined mouth. The elongated earlobes constitute one of the lakshanas, traditional signs of the Buddha’s exceptional nature.
The sculpture bears witness to the stylistic transition between the U-Thong tradition and the early classical art of Ayutthaya, a particularly significant development during the 15th century. The U-Thong style is notably characterised by a more powerful facial structure and by the combined influence of the Khmer and Mon traditions, prior to its gradual assimilation into Ayutthaya art.
