BUDDHA HEAD Khmer Empire – Bayon style Late 12th – early 13th century Reign of Jayavarman VII (1181–c. 1218) Beige sandstone Height: 55 cm A magnificent Khmer Buddha head carved from sandstone with an antique patina, characteristic of the great Bayon statuary tradition, a major period in Khmer art during the reign of Jayavarman VII. The face, of great nobility, displays the characteristic features of the Bayon aesthetic: wide, drooping eyelids; gently curved brow ridges; a straight, powerful nose; and full lips forming a slight, meditative smile, lending the whole figure an expression of profound serenity. The hairstyle consists of a raised ushnisha, rendered in concentric layers, forming a particularly elegant silhouette. The long ears, once adorned with pendants, emphasise the monumentality of the head. The sculpture is distinguished by the simplicity of its modelling, the softness of its forms and, above all, by this introspective, almost meditative expression, so characteristic of the Buddhist sculpture of the Bayon. The reverse and the lower part bear evidence of the head having been separated from the body in the past; it is now mounted on a modern plinth. Condition: in good overall condition for an archaeological sculpture of this significance; wear and minor ancient chips consistent with the work’s age. Beautiful surface patina.
