The Porte Saint-Denis in Paris, a bustling scene
Watercolour and grey wash over pencil lines, on paper.
The composition depicts the south side of the monument, bustling with numerous figures and horse-drawn carriages.
Circa 1820–1830.
Dimensions to be confirmed: 50 × 50 cm
Framed under glass in a wooden and gilded stucco frame decorated with ovals and pearls.
A few foxing spots, stains and slight deterioration of the paper. Not examined outside the frame.
Note: The Porte Saint-Denis was erected in 1672 by the architect François Blondel, with sculpted decoration by Michel Anguier, to celebrate the victories of Louis XIV.
