Description
Reproduction of the ‘Meguilat Ezrahout’ certificate of honorary citizenship (State of Israel), in honour of the Righteous Among the Nations, 5 May 1985
Reproduction of a ‘Meguilat Ezrahout’ (מגילת אזרחות), an official certificate by which the State of Israel grants honorary citizenship (or posthumous citizenship) to the Righteous Among the Nations who saved Jews during the Holocaust. The Hebrew text, surmounted by the national emblem (the menorah), reflects the gratitude of the State and the Jewish people towards these rescuers. The document is explicitly dated 5 May 1985 (“ ה’ באייר תשמ”ה”), to mark the 40th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, and bears the handwritten signature of Yitzhak Navon, then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Culture — a title written out in full beneath the signature (סגן ראש הממשלה ושר החינוך והתרבות).
The composition is expressively arranged around the official text: two arms stretched towards the sky, rendered in broad black hatching reminiscent of charcoal, holding an unfurled prayer shawl (talith) — evoking liberation, mourning and national hope.
A printed inscription, partially illegible, appears in the bottom left-hand corner of the composition (probably a studio or printer’s credit); a closer examination at a higher resolution would allow it to be identified.
