Description
A Jewish wedding scene, in the surrealist style (probably by Yankel Ginzburg) A polychrome surrealist composition depicting a traditional Jewish wedding. In the centre, a veiled bride appears on the right, whilst on the left a man in a dark suit and bowler hat symbolically receives an object (a ring?) from a disproportionately large hand emerging from the composition. The scene is brought to life by klezmer musicians (a violinist and a clarinettist), guests in traditional black attire and stylised Hasidic figures, all structured by a Cubist-inspired architectural fragmentation. The treatment of the oversized hands, the Hasidic figures and the warm colour palette (ochre, green, red) is characteristic of the style of Yankel Ginzburg (born Yuri Zhukov in 1945 in Kazakhstan), a painter, sculptor and printmaker of Russian-Israeli origin, trained in Israel, whose work blends surrealism, Jewish symbolism and intertwined Russian and Israeli identities. Technique: signed and numbered print Medium: paper Dimensions: 118 x 80 cm Condition: unframed, stored rolled up
